About this Event
Resistance and Resilience Guelph's Housing Working Group will be hosting an event focused on the development of a local tenant union. We want you to bring your story of being a tenant in Guelph and strategize with others in the community so we can craft a response that’s stronger together.
- Attendees will be able to learn more about Bill 60 and how MPP Mike Schreiner says we can organize against it.
- A representative from the Legal Clinic of Guelph & Wellington County will speak about what kind of services are currently in place and how we can build upon them.
- Finally, a representative from ACORN will talk about the benefits of becoming a chapter in a larger tenant association and the successes that are possible when we work together.
We will conclude with a community discussion about what a Guelph tenant union could look like and offer, and considerations of whether or not to join a larger association. Please come and offer your input.
This work is the result of a Resistance & Resilience Guelph’s community-driven efforts that identified Guelph as particularly vulnerable to the effects of the housing crisis as one of the only major cities in the area without a tenant union. Additionally, Guelph is also one of the most affected cities by US tariffs, which results in tenant strain due to lay-offs and the rising cost of living crisis. At the same time, in Ontario, Bill 60 is weakening renter protections. Your involvement in this area is one of the strongest ways to build community resilience, prevent further homelessness, and resist the impacts of US economic attacks.
