Journal, reflect, paint, sculpt, and create! At the end of this series, you’d have created your very own journal and paintings, guided by artist Michelle Richardson. This 4-part series invites community members to reflect on the stories embedded in Newport News landmarks and discover the shared resilience between these spaces and their own lived experiences. It is where art becomes a catalyst for reflection, renewal, and forward movement. Each part offers inspiration, restoration and valuable tools to reach personal goals. Whether you’re seeking clarity, motivation, confidence, social connection or a creative reset, this space is here for you.
Participants will begin with a guided tour of the pieces in Michelle Richardson's “Reflections of Resilience” collection, setting the foundation for personal and collective reflection. From there, we will design custom journals to track our journey. All supplies are provided by the instructor.
A 4-part series; register for individual standalone sessions, or receive a discount if you register for all four!
Week 1: Design Journal Cover- We’ll use paint with mixed media embellishments for the cover and add printed “tips for the journey” to the inside cover.
Week 2: Build a richly layered 3D outdoor scene that captures the quiet beauty of a natural landscape. Lush foliage and carefully placed flowers will add depth, color, and organic rhythm. The interpretation of this painting will unfold in class where you will see it come to life.
Week 3: Canvas painting of a tree emerging through layered fields of background color. The interpretation of this painting will unfold in class, where you will see it come to life.
Week 4: Canvas Painting of “The Door Of Opportunity” with added 3D elements. The interpretation of this painting will unfold in class, where you will see it come to life.
