March 14th to 16th for a unique and immersive experience in the heart of the Cajun bayous. This three-day event offers two transformative workshops running concurrently, allowing you to choose your path of creativity and connection. Engage in the ancient craft of tanning deer hide into buckskin with Buckskin Billy or delve into the sacred art of women's drum making with guide Jessa Frymire. Both workshops begin together on Friday night with the communal preparation of the hides, followed by dedicated sessions for each discipline on Saturday.
Experience the rich cultural backdrop of the Cajun bayous, complete with authentic meals, curated by a local chef, enhancing your connection to the craft and the community. Saturday night will be a special outing to Bayou Teche brewery, where you will enjoy live music, local brews, and astonishingly some of the best pizza and gluten free pizza in the south! We encourage you to bring your favorite leather clothes to wear out for this fun night out! Engage in meaningful conversations, partake in sacred rituals, and leave with a deep sense of accomplishment and connection.
NATIVE BUCKSKIN TANNING
Instructor: Buckskin Billy
Learn the art of transforming deer hide into exquisite buckskin. This workshop hones virtues such as patience, perseverance, and reverence. You can choose to bring your own deer hide, have one provided to take home, or contribute to a community hide, which will be auctioned at the end of the event.
SACRED WOMEN'S DRUM MAKING
Instructor: Jessa Frymire
Guided by Jessa Frymire, whose training includes South American indigenous sacred rites, this workshop offers a profound journey into the creation of sacred women's drums. Beginning with the hide preparation on Friday night, the group will split on Saturday morning to focus on drum making. You will not only craft your own drum but also immerse yourself in the spiritual practices and teachings that Jessa brings. This workshop fosters a deep connection to the spiritual heritage of the Cajun bayous, enriched by cultural meals and live music that celebrate the local traditions.
