Brushstrokes of Serenity: Japanese Ink PaintingA Journey in Japanese Sumi-e Ink Painting
We are lucky to host Ayako Miller, a visionary artist who is an expert in Sumi-e, traditional Japanese ink painting. In this method of black ink painting the practitioner attempts to express complex feelings and subjects with simple, minimalistic black Sumi ink strokes. Derived from charcoal, these simple Sumi ink strokes are the key to making an expressive, yet tranquil painting. Sumi-e originated from Zen Art, which Buddhist monks and Samurai used to meditate and develop discipline.
We will paint simple and fun subjects from nature, such as fish, plants, animals, and basic Japanese calligraphy. Students will learn the basic techniques including making ink, brush strokes, creating traditional and non-traditional subjects, along with knowledge of the history and culture of this art form. Due to the nature of this art form, even a participant who feels they have little artistic ability will be able to create beautiful works of art to bring home.
Last time we hosted Ayako the entire class was blown away by the peaceful instruction and invitation to create beautifully simple art.
