Wine descriptions:
1) The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino has taken on a hard red candy note in its bouquet that mixes with peppery rose, licorice and wild strawberries. It’s soothingly seductive and classic in feel, as purple toned inner florals mix with mineral-tinged berries and spices. Sweet tannins linger yet don’t get in the way, as the 2019 literally buzzes with residual energy, while tapering off with an inner earthiness and hints of cherry pits. I expect a long and enjoyable development over time, as this Rosso di Montalcino still aches for a bit more cellaring.
2) A burst of black cherries and cloves gives way to shavings of cedar and lifting hints of
mentholated herbs as the dynamic 2020 Brunello di Montalcino comes to life in the glass. This is soothingly round and pliant with an inner sweetness up front and crisp wild berry fruits that cascade across the palate. It's structured and firm, yet its tannins are sweet and round, tapering off with a pleasantly bitter tinge of blackberry and sour citrus. The 2020 aims to please and it is already incredibly approachable today. With no Riserva produced in 2020, all of the juice from Vigna Vecchia Mercatale was used to bolster this spectacular Brunello.
3) The 2016 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino is flat-out stunning, remarkably vibrant and an almost-ethereal expression. There’s an exotic citrusy tinge to its ripe black cherries, taking on hints of sage, cedar and allspice, all grounded by moist earth tones. It’s focused and remarkably pure with a noticeable inner sweetness to the red and hints of blackberry fruit, all cast across a silky, feminine frame. The structure builds like a crescendo, as minerals fade to youthful tannins. Juicy acids maintain perfect balance from start to finish, making for a surprisingly fresh expression yet with amazing length. There’s simply so much going on here, and there are promises of more good things to come.
4) The cask-aged 2003 Brunello di Montalcino from Canalicchio di Sopra is a big, full-bodied wine packed with vibrant dark fruit. It coats the palate with gorgeous depth and persistence, showing terrific energy and notable overall balance. This is a great effort from Canalicchio di Sopra andone of the estate's best wines in recent memory.
5) 1994 is mature yet in no fear of decline, the 1994 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino wafts up from the glass with a display of crushed black cherry, balsamic spice, tobacco, earthy minerals and damp fall leaves. It floods the palate with silky textures and gorgeous, dark ripe fruits, verging on fleshy, yet wrangled in by zesty acids, creating a deeply satisfying but also cleansing expression. The finish is long, showing just a hint of residual tannin with echoes of sweet inner florals.
6) The copper-colored 2008 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is somehow both intense and also remarkably fresh. Burnt sugar, caramel, dried herbs and spice all resonate in this vivid, deeply expressive wine. As always, Fontodi excels with a rich, unctuous style of Vin Santo. The 2008, though, has terrific freshness and more than enough acidity to play off the richer elements. The 110 grams per liter of residual sugar are not especially evident. This is a spectacular Vin Santo by any measure.
