Old Engine No. 25 was a Class Y-1 Consolidation steam engine locomotive that was built for the Northern Pacific Railway Company in 1899 by Schenectady Locomotive Works in Schenectady, New York. Old Engine No. 25’s main job was to haul heavy freight loads over steep slopes, like Pipestone Pass. Engine No. 25 was also used to help move other trains, and later used in Wallace, Idaho, because of the steep grades there.Engine No. 25 was given to the Butte Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) by the Northern Pacific Railway on August 18th, 1957, and was later dedicated and installed near the Butte Civic Center on July 3rd, 1958. The Butte Jaycees, of which Al Hess and Ron Gruss are members, are currently working on preserving the locomotive so that future generations can see the engine and learn about local railroad history. Please join us to learn more about the history of Engine No. 25 and how the preservation project is progressing from Al Hess and Ron Gruss.
