In this workshop, students will work with Tampico agave fiber and linen cord to create a counter brush and a scrub brush using traditional broom-tying techniques. Tampico is a wonderful fiber that is stiff enough for daily scrubbing when cut short as a dish brush and makes for a soft but robust whisk broom when tied longer. The counter brush is a miniature whisk broom in the turkey wing style. The fine but dense fibers are perfect for getting toaster crumbs or coffee grounds off the counter, brushing a tablecloth clean, or cleaning up bits and pieces from your art/craft space. Along with the counter brush, you’ll tie a round scrub brush, which can be used to scrub your dishes or clean your vegetables. Tampico fiber holds its shape quite well and is durable enough to survive daily scrubbing duty for a year or more.
Level – Beginner: No experience needed.
Your instructor is Robert Sheckler of Redmond Philbert Handwork, an enthusiastic learner, teacher, and crafter living and working in the Portland area. Beyond the visceral joy of broom-making, Robert is interested in elevating natural materials over synthetic alternatives and loves to incorporate color into his work, making an everyday object and an everyday activity feel special, vibrant, and even fun.
