Opening this run of Broken Hearts Club is Rouge, Stanley Kwan's supernatural romance set between 1930s and 1980s Hong Kong. A humble courtesan named Fleur and Chan, the wayward heir to a wealthy family, fall in love amid the opulent teahouses of old Hong Kong, and when his family refuses to accept the match, the pair make a suicide pact to be reunited in the afterlife. Fifty years later, Fleur's ghost returns to modern Hong Kong, still waiting, and enlists a young couple's help to track down the lover who never arrived.
Starring Cantopop superstars Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung, Rouge swept the Hong Kong Film Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Mui, and remains one of the most beloved films of Hong Kong's golden age. Watching it now carries an extra, unplanned layer of heartbreak: both Mui and Cheung died within six months of each other in 2003, forever preserved here at the height of their youth and glamour.
