Told out of chronological order, the film follows Tom, a hopelessly romantic greeting-card writer, as he pieces together the 500 days of his relationship with the free-spirited Summer, trying to understand exactly where and why it all fell apart. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, it's less a love story than a story about the stories we tell ourselves about love.
Marc Webb's directorial debut became a genuine cultural moment, praised for subverting the conventions of the romantic comedy by refusing to give audiences the tidy ending they expect, and for its now-iconic use of Los Angeles architecture and a needle-drop-heavy soundtrack.
