Broken Hearts Club: 500 Days of Summer
🗓 Wednesday, August 12 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Week two brings a modern heartbreak favourite: 500 Days of Summer. Told out of chronological order, the film follows Tom, a hopelessly romantic greeting-card writer, as he pieces together the 500 days of his relationship with the free-spirited Summer, trying to understand exactly where and why it all fell apart. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, it's less a love story than a story about the stories we tell ourselves about love.
Marc Webb's directorial debut became a genuine cultural moment, praised for subverting the conventions of the romantic comedy by refusing to give audiences the tidy ending they expect, and for its now-iconic use of Los Angeles architecture and a needle-drop-heavy soundtrack. It remains one of the defining breakup films of its generation, and in 2025 was voted by New York Times readers among the 100 best films of the 21st century.
"A strong contender for the most original date movie of the year." — Empire
"A delightful comedy, alive with invention." — Roger Ebert
