A MESSAGE FROM BRIGHTER DAYS:
We’re very sorry to announce that Mike Steva’s New Zealand debut performance has had to be rescheduled. Mike has suffered an injury which prevents him from flying. He was desperate to avoid letting anyone down, but his health is our primary concern. We’re currently working on a new date which will be announced as soon as possible. All ticket-holders will, of course, receive a refund.
In keeping with our optimistic outlook, Brighter Days will still bring you a top-notch night at Ink, with DJs Andy Vann, Duncan Wylie (formerly Duncan Funk) and Chris Reed dropping deep and driving house gems all night long. It’s set to be a busy Saturday night in Tāmaki Makaurau. Whatever you’re doing, wherever you’re going, look forward to some Brighter Days at Ink.
Brighter Days, in association with Grass Green Recordings, presents ….
NZ debut:
MIKE STEVA
(Yoruba/Innervisions/Defected/Glitterbox/Deeper Roots Music)
From the sun-drenched festivals of Croatia to the underground clubs of California, Mike Steva’s deep percussive beats captivate dance floors wherever he plays.
Fusing world influences, organic instrumentation and electronic soundscapes, his signature sound has found favour with true heavyweights of the global scene - from Louie Vega and Simon Dunmore to Gilles Peterson and Ame.
The Melbourne resident has racked up more than 100 releases for labels as diverse as Innervisions and Glitterbox, but his breakthrough came on Osunlade’s Yoruba.
Steva’s talents were spotted by Osunlade on his first tour of Australia. His debut EP for Yoruba included New Beginning, later signed by Defected. His debut album, 2014’s Who Am I, was among Peterson’s albums of the year and later remixed by the likes of Vega, Atjazz and Manoo.
Steva’s second album, 2020’s Earth Mother, offered a positive, healing take on house, with live instrumentation and collaborations showcasing his musical evolution.
Other releases that year included a disco gem for Glitterbox under the alias Space Funk, a release on Defected’s Sondela and an EP for Ame and Dixon’s Innversions.
Dixon said: "In times where house music is divided into zillions of sub-genres, it’s rare to hear a record that ticks all the boxes. Steva is producing music that sounds old-, new- and future-school.”
2022 saw Steva perform at the Defected Festival in Croatia, on a European tour that also saw him play to 5000 people at the Ceco Fest in an ancient Albanian fortress.
Now he’s coming to New Zealand for the first time, for a one-night-only showcase at Auckland’s spiritual home of house, Ink.
With support from Andy Vann, D. Wylie and Chris Reed.
