DOMINICAN BACHATA WORKSHOP DETAILS
Where does Bachata come from?
In the early 1960s, Bachata arose among rural poor communities in the Dominican Republic, a neighbour of Cuba, as a fusion of rhythmic Cuban bolero with other Cuban genres like Son and Cha-Cha-Cha; then, in the 1980s, with elements of Merengue, also from the Dominican Republic.
Why is it relevant today?
In recent decades, Bachata has transformed into one of the most popular dances on the social dance floor and now includes various urban styles. The original Dominican Bachata is full of flavour, syncopation, musicality and rhythm changes, and celebrates partner connection and footwork. Currently, there is renewed interest from dancers who want to learn original, authentic styles and flavour; to gain a deeper understanding of Caribbean rhythms; and; and to honour the peoples from which Bachata arose.
Why learn Bachata?
“Dominican Bachata is an important dance form to learn as it can be applied to many types of modern music, not just Bachata music. Bachata’s simple 1-2-3-4 rhythm makes it easier to grasp for new students of dance; however, once you add in some fancy footwork and body movement, it quickly requires greater expertise and dexterity” — Vivio Ramos Mediceja.
1. Gain greater understanding about the origins and roots of Bachata from which every other Bachata style has emerged.
2. Bachata is one of the easiest rhythms to learn and, therefore, can be more easily picked up by novice dancers, and applied to different genres of music.
3. Develop your flavour through Bachata footwork and body movement techniques and see how it relates to music on the dance floor.
WORKSHOP CONTENT
This workshop is designed for Beginners level and above. No partners are required. You will learn the fundamental steps and techniques for dancing Dominican Bachata, memorise a repertoire of moves to dance to both traditional and contemporary Bachata music, and develop your musicality, timing, plus body movement and posture.
