Bright Shadows: Scottish Art in the 1920s
The 1920s was a period of clashing contrasts: high spirits and decadent excess on one hand, hard realities and sombre reflection on the other. The bright lights and threatening shadows of the era shaped the lives and careers of many Scottish artists, influencing the artworks they created. This lecture, based on the 2020 exhibition Bright Shadows: Scottish Art in the 1920s, explores the events, ideas and styles that made the 1920s such a fascinating decade. Featuring artworks by S.J. Peploe, Dorothy Johnstone, Eric Robertson, Stanley Cursiter and many more.
Dr Helen Scott is Curator of Fine Art at the City Art Centre, where she specialises in 19th and 20th century Scottish art. Since joining the City Art Centre, she has curated more than twenty exhibitions and written monographs on the artists Edwin G. Lucas, Mary Cameron and Adam Bruce Thomson.
