BRIDGING THE GAP-DOUBLE EVENT-ARTIST TALKS AND PERFORMANCES

Come join us for a series of events where Artist Talks are hosted by Paul Carey-Kent. A selection of exhibiting artists will discuss their work and practice in front of their exhibits in gallery 1 Hypha Gallery South Bank.

Bookended by performances where Rosalind Davis, Justin Hibbs, Ben Lancaster and Jamal Sterrett collaborate. This is a multi-disciplinary inter-generational multi-cultural group comprising of four artists. Each artist contributes their distinct practice to a collaboration that merges sculptural installation, improvised electronic music, and contemporary dance.

Visual artists Rosalind Davis and Justin Hibbs collaborate to create immersive sculptural environments composed of modular elements, including steel structures and folded mirror sculptures that reflect one another, challenging our perception of space. The viewer becomes the central protagonist, navigating their reflection through a fragmented space of illusory borders. Having worked together on numerous exhibitions,Davis and Hibbs playfully challenge the boundaries between their independent practices, questioning notions of authorship, autonomy, and control while considering broader social and political implications of artmaking.

Movement artist Jamal Sterrett brings a highly distinctive approach to ‘Bruk-up’ a street dance genre originating from Jamaica. His unique style of gliding, popping, balletic movement and illusionistic body contortions become expressions of alternate aspects of character, the animalistic and his cultural identity. He has performed previously in this collaborative group and worked with Rosalind Davis and Justin Hibbs on an Ident for ITV aired nationally in 2021.

Musician Ben Lancaster works with Modular Synthesisers to create improvised soundscapes that draw upon a wide range of sonic influences from sound system culture, dub, electronic music, improvised jazz and underground Dance music. He has collaborated previously in this grouping and alongside Hibbs, creating exhibition sound works and as part of Synthesis Sound Archive; a music / visual art project that released its debut vinyl release ‘Hidden Future / Reverse Synthesis in 2022.
