The landscape of psychedelic therapy has undergone rapid transformation in recent years. Cities and states have moved to decriminalize some psychedelic substances while psilocybin and MDMA have entered phase 3 trials for the treatment of major depressive disorder and PTSD. Ketamine clinics have proliferated around the country.

Even therapists who do not plan to utilize psychedelics within their practice will be confronted with patients who have questions about these treatments. Psychoanalytic psychotherapists traditionally value the depth and enduring impact of ongoing treatment, whereas psychedelic therapies are often promoted for their potential to achieve rapid change. This talk explores how these substances might be used within a psychoanalytic framework. Ethical considerations will be at the forefront, highlighting how therapists can provide safe, competent, and legally sound care while holding on to psychoanalytic values.

The presentation addresses essential topics in clinical ethics surrounding psychedelic therapy, such as scope of practice and the nuances of recommending psychedelic interventions, navigating local and federal legal landscapes, and examining key ethical dilemmas through case examples.

Presenter:

Kevin Barrett received his master's degree from the Crown Family School of Social
Work, Policy, and Practice at the University of Chicago where he is now a lecturer teaching courses on psychodynamic theory and psychedelic psychotherapy. Kevin was an APsaA Teacher's Academy Fellow in 2020, and is a candidate at the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. He has published on the intersection of psychedelics and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. He is in private practice in Chicago, IL
