Hoe benader je een instrument waarvoor al een enorm repertoire geschreven is? Het is het uitgangspunt van enkele van de componisten die de revue passeren in het nieuwste project van Brecht Valckenaers. In zijn Musica Ricercata, dat uit elf korte stukjes bestaat, experimenteert György Ligeti met simpele structuren, ritmes en klanken. Hij begint met slecht twee noten, om er bij ieder nieuw stukje eentje toe te voegen, totdat uiteindelijk alle noten uit de twaalftoonreeks klinken. Doel was om uit de schaduw van Bartók te treden. Maar helemaal los kwam hij niet.
Valckenaers combineert dit stuk van Ligeti met werken van Lachenmann, Cowell, Kurtág, Crumb en jawel, Bartók en voegt er ook nog enkele eigen composities aan toe. Ligeti en companen worden in ware estafettestijl met elkaar afgewisseld waardoor de grenzen tussen de componisten vervagen.

How should you approach an instrument for which an enormous repertoire already exists? This was the starting point for some of the composers featured in Brecht Valckenaers’s latest project. In his Musica Ricercata, a collection of eleven short pieces, György Ligeti experiments with simple structures, rhythms, and sounds. Starting with just two notes, he adds one more for each new piece until eventually all the notes from the twelve-tone series have been heard. His aim was to step out of Bartók’s shadow. However, he never quite managed to break free.
Valckenaers combines this Ligeti piece with works by Lachenmann, Cowell, Kurtág, Crumb and Bartók, as well as adding a few of his own compositions. Ligeti and his contemporaries are presented in true relay style, blurring the boundaries between the composers.
