Breaking Ice: Sonali Kolhatkar on Immigration, Identity, & Belonging

Join us for a special afternoon with author Sonali Kolhatkar hosted by Free Speech TV at The Shop at MATTER in Denver. Sonali will share insights from her book, Breaking Ice, joined by an immigration justice activist for a timely and thought-provoking conversation about immigration, the human stories behind today's headlines, and an account of the growing immigration movement.
There will be plenty of time for questions, conversation, and connection. Following the discussion, Sonali will sign books during an informal reception, where refreshments will be served.
The event is free, but space is limited to 50 guests and advance registration is required.
When you register, you'll also have the option to purchase copies of Breaking Ice. Your book will be waiting for you at the event, where Sonali will be happy to personally sign it.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
SONALI KOLHATKAR is an award-winning multimedia journalist. She is the racial justice editor at YES! Magazine and the host of YES! Presents: Rising Up With Sonali, a weekly television and radio program that airs on Free Speech TV and Pacifica Radio stations and affiliates around the United States. Sonali is a senior correspondent of the Economy For All Project at the Independent Media Institute and the author of Rising Up: The Power of Narrative in Pursuing Racial Justice. She has won numerous awards, including Best TV Anchor and Best National Political Commentary from the LA Press Club, and has been nominated for Best Radio Anchor four years in a row.
Sonali has won numerous awards for her journalism, including Best TV Anchor from the LA Press Club in 2015, and was also nominated for Best Radio Anchor 4 years in a row. She won First Place at the Los Angeles Press Club Annual Awards for Best National Commentary Political Online (2022) and Best Election Commentary (2016).
ABOUT THE BOOK
In Breaking ICE, award-winning journalist Sonali Kolhatkar presents her conversations with over a dozen movement organizers, lawyers, artists, labor leaders, and scholars on the frontlines of the fight. Through their courageous stories, Kolhatkar documents the impact of ICE violence, workplace raids, mass surveillance, and intimidation tactics, and how communities from Maine to California are organizing for a better world. Our present actions will not only determine the nature of American demographics from here on out, but also whether the future of the United States will look like an open multiracial democracy or a fascist police state.

ACCESSIBILITY
Parking: Metered street parking is available (parallel parking) on Market St. Paid lots are available within a few blocks. The closest one is on 21st and Market St.
Entrance Access: Our front door is at street level and manually operated, accessible for wheelchairs and mobility aids. The rest of the block has sidewalks raised by five steps; however, the bike lane offers a step-free route down the block with minimal car traffic.
Restrooms: All-gender restrooms. Just like at home.
Communication: All staff on site speak English. There will be one Spanish speaking staff member. We welcome communication via translation apps (Google Translate is available). While we do not use ASL, we’re happy to communicate through apps or other tools that work for you.
Alcohol Policy: No alcohol will be served or permitted at this event.
