BREAKFAST: BUILT TO SCALE (session 4 of 6): Issues
About this Event
Session four of six · Solve problems once, for good
About the series
Not a talk. Not networking with a speaker bolted on.
Built to Scale is six working mornings for business leaders, founders and managing directors who are past the start-up stage and finding that what got them here is now in the way. Each session takes one part of running a business, works through it properly with the room, and sends everyone away with something they can act on that week.
Two practitioners run it — one on the operating side, one on the commercial side. Both have sat in the chairs the room is sitting in.
Most people problems are planning problems. Most growth problems are structure problems. Very few are effort problems. That’s the through-line of the series, and the reason the sessions are ordered the way they are.
This session
Every leadership team has a list of problems it keeps discussing and never solves. They get raised in the corridor, nodded at in the meeting, and they’re still there a quarter later. Session four is about getting them out of the corridor and onto a list — and then actually closing them.
- How to build an issues list your team will actually use, and what a healthy one looks like
- Prioritising: which three issues get solved this week, and why list order is the wrong guide
- Telling the difference between a problem that needs a decision and one that’s being avoided
- The commercial lens: whatever an issue looks like on the surface, it comes down to people, process or profit — and naming which one you’re dealing with is usually what unsticks it
The morning
The shape is the same every session, so you always know what you’re committing to.
- 8:30 — Arrival, breakfast, coffee. No name badges, no pitching
- 9:00 — Welcome. Ten minutes on where this session sits in the series
- 9:10 — The workshop, with tools you can take away
- 10:15 — Break
- 10:30 — The commercial lens: the same topic from the revenue side
- 11:15 — Close and open networking. One action to take away
- 11:30 — Finish
The six sessions
You can join at any point, but the sequence is deliberate — each one assumes the last.

Who it’s for
The room only works if everyone in it is carrying the same kind of weight.
It’s for you if you’re the founder, managing director or chief executive; the business is past the start-up stage, typically 10 to 250 people; you want to grow and suspect the constraint is now internal; and you’ll say something honest in a room of your peers.
It’s not for you if you’re coming to sell to the room, you want a keynote rather than a working session, you can’t commit three hours without stepping out to take calls, or you’re sending a delegate instead of coming yourself.
