Bravehearts International Basketball Championship (BIBC) Returns for its 10th Anniversary Celebration.By Sani Mbofana
The highly anticipated Bravehearts International Basketball Championship (BIBC) is back, marking a decade of excellence in promoting basketball talent in Southern Africa. This year's tournament is a celebration of the Bravehearts Basketball Club's 10th anniversary and its remarkable contribution to the development of the game in Malawi and the region.
The Bravehearts Basketball Club has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception, not only in terms of its basketball prowess but also in its commitment to empowering young minds through education. The club's scholarship programs, sponsored by GY Imports and Exports, have enabled numerous brilliant students to attain university degrees. The club's Executive Chairman, Mr. Griffin Kalua, has been instrumental in driving this vision, demonstrating his passion for basketball as both a sponsor and the team's head coach.
The Bravehearts teams have enjoyed tremendous success, claiming championship titles in both the ladies' and men's leagues. Their participation in regional tournaments has been impressive, with the men's team making history by qualifying for the second round of the prestigious Basketball Africa League (BAL).
This year's BIBC promises to be an exciting affair, with 8 female teams, 8 male teams, and 4 Madala teams competing for top honors. The main sponsor, GY Imports and Exports, has announced an attractive prize package, including:
- A cash prize of $5,000 to be shared equally between the winning male and female teams ($2,500 each)
- A cash prize of $2,000 to be shared equally between the runner-up male and female teams ($1,000 each)
- A cash prize of $1,000 to be shared equally between the third-placed male and female teams ($500 each)
- Medals and trophies for all three teams in each category
- Laptops and $100 cash prizes for the Most Valuable Players (MVPs) in each category
The Madala category will receive trophies and medals, but no cash prizes.
Mark your calendars for the BIBC, scheduled to take place from September 18-21, 2025. The Bravehearts International Basketball Championship (BIBC) is a testament to the club's dedication to promoting basketball excellence and empowering young minds. As the tournament celebrates its 10th anniversary, it promises to be an unforgettable experience for teams, players, and fans alike.
When asked about his satisfaction with the game and his vision, GY Executive Chairman Griffin Kalua expressed his delight in seeing the kids respond positively to his vision. He noted that it is fulfilling to see them excel both academically and on the court. "It doesn't pain me at all to invest in these kids when I see them achieving their goals," he said. Kalua's vision extends beyond Malawi's borders, with aspirations of sending his players to destinations like Asia, where they can play professionally, earn a living, and further their education.
GY Imports and Exports had a 10-year strategic plan that was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the institution is pleased to have achieved 60% of its objectives. Kalua's ultimate goal is to establish a state-of-the-art basketball academy with dedicated courts, where players can focus on their game without compromising their education.
In an effort to enhance the team's performance, Kalua plans to introduce a more systematic approach to the game, focusing on offense, defense, and overall strategy. He drew inspiration from a recent article on structured basketball we did. "I was reading one of your articles on structured basketball, and I must say, it resonated with my vision for the team," Kalua said. "Africa should be prepared, as they won't know what hit them in four to five years," Kalua confidently stated. With his vision and dedication, the Bravehearts Basketball Club is poised to make a lasting impact on the sport in Malawi and beyond.
