Marcus and Whitney Edwards of BirdNirds will explore Georgia’s seven species of woodpeckers, including the Downy, Hairy, Red-headed, Red-bellied, Pileated, Northern Flicker, and Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker. They will discuss identification, behavior, nesting, and migration of these fascinating birds. Following the presentation, join them for Woodpecker Trivia to test your knowledge!Join us on Saturday, April 11th at 2:00 pm as we welcome Marcus and Whitney Edwards of Rome, Georgia’s BirdNirds, to share with us the fascinating lives of some of Georgia’s most recognizable birds!

About the Speakers: Marcus and Whitney are co-founders of BirdNirds, a local birdwatching group, in their community of Rome, Georgia. Through a partnership with Rome-Floyd E.C.O. Center, they host a monthly meeting where they present on various birding topics followed by an exploration of the wetlands near the center. The club got its start at Hightower Trail Middle School in Marietta, Georgia, where Whitney served as a teacher. The club became the most diverse and second largest extra-curricular group at the school. Since relocating to Rome, BirdNirds has expanded to include community birders of all ages and interest levels. The couple completed the Master Birders course through Birds Georgia, formerly Georgia Audubon, in 2023. They completed the Master Naturalist program through UGA Cobb Extension Office in 2025. They are passionate about conservation and sharing their love of birds and wildlife.
Please arrive at least 25-30 minutes early; you will need to use our shuttle service or walk the Summit path to the mountaintop amphitheater!
