Performances may be experienced by children and families.
Certain bands come together inevitably, and Voodoo 5 is certainly one. Made up of exotica OG’s, this Los Angeles unit – named in honor of Robert Drasnin’s legendary Voodoo albums – has brought the style back to its roots while adding something truly distinct to the tradition from which it emerged.
Fronted by the extraordinary vocalist Lena Marie Cardinale – whose ability to sing jazz and Latin music channeling Yma Sumac quickly established her as a force – the ensemble is something of an all-star affair, with Mark Riddle (aka Marty Lush) on vibes, upright bassist Paul Eckman (Orchestra Superstring), conguero extraordinaire Cesar Ventura (Boogaloo Assassins, Joe Bataan), flutist Jay Work (Bonedaddys), and steel guitar newcomer Connor Gallaher. The ensemble is directed by exotica’s heir apparent, guitarist Skip Heller, whose epic collaborations with Robert Drasnin, Elisabeth Waldo, Yma Sumac and other space age legends have established him as keeper of the flame. Not content to settle for revivalism, the group blends true old school Denny/Lyman sounds with Hawaiian guitar, film noir, Drasnin-esque female vocals, and Tjader-tinged Latin jazz.
