Walk to and Around Brackenbed – Discover Halifax’s Hidden History
Join us for a gentle community walk through Brackenbed, exploring the fascinating stories hidden within one of Halifax’s most transformed landscapes.
Starting near Torevell Dent on Angel Road, Pellon Lane, this easy, no-climb walk follows the historic Birks Hall Carriage Drive through Snake Hill Woods and into Brackenbed Park. Along the way, you'll uncover tales of grand Victorian homes, lost railways, ambitious bridge proposals, Halifax’s early water supply, Dean Clough’s industrial heritage, and the former Birks Hall and Shroggs landfill sites that have since been transformed into the beautiful green space we enjoy today.
Led by local historian David Glover, with historic photographs and illustrations provided throughout the walk, participants will learn about:
- The proposed 1890 bridge that was never built
- The historic pathways used by Dean Clough mill workers
- Birks Hall and its notable residents
- Halifax’s former railway and industrial landscape
- Shroggs Wireworks and the area's manufacturing heritage
- The remarkable story of how a former landfill became Brackenbed we see today
We'll also take time to enjoy the meadow, wildlife and panoramic views across Halifax, including the iconic Dean Clough chimney.
The walk concludes at the Shroggs Road entrance, where participants can collect a lunch to enjoy in the park's picnic area.
Accessibility: This is a leisurely walk with no significant climbing, but some paths may be uneven or slippery, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
