📖 About the book:
Jacob Swinton is dying of lung cancer. In his final months, he decides to write letters to his estranged gay son, Isaac — a man he pushed away for years. Through those letters, Jacob recounts his life lessons, his regrets, and the love he struggled to express; confronting the homophobia he was raised with and the awakening that came, too late, from finally allowing himself to question it. Tender, unflinching, and deeply human, this is a book about the grief of estrangement, and what we do with love that never found its way out.
💬 Our conversation:
June is Pride Month, and this book sits right at the intersection of queer grief and family loss. We'll talk about what it means to be rejected by a parent, and what it means to grieve that rejection, whether the parent is still living or not. We'll talk about the particular weight of estrangement, of mourning a relationship that existed in the same house but never quite in the same world.
We'll also hold space for the grief that comes with being unseen, unnamed, or unloved in the ways that mattered most, and the complicated, sometimes impossible question of whether reconciliation means anything if it arrives too late.
This is about chosen family and lost family. About the cost of silence. About loving people who didn't know how to love you back, and grieving all the versions of that.
