Boro Mending Practices: Stitch, Patch & Repair with Laura GriffithsYamamoto

Join textile artist Laura Griffiths-Yamamoto for a relaxed, hands-on introduction to Boro mending practices and the art of repairing cloth through layering, stitching and reuse.

During this two-hour workshop, Laura will introduce participants to the history and principles of Boro mending in Japan and explore its relationship with resourcefulness, repair and the philosophy of mottainai - recognising and respecting the intrinsic value that remains within objects and materials.

Through demonstration and guided practice, you will learn how to work with sashiko thread, prepare and layer fabric, secure your thread, and experiment with simple hand-stitching techniques. You will then use these skills to create your own Boro-inspired textile patch to take home, ready to incorporate into a garment or future mending project.

No previous sewing experience is required. The workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike, with plenty of individual guidance available.
