About this Event

EN

This special collaboration between the Mexican Studies Institute at CUNY and PEN America’s DREAMing Out Loud program highlights the transformative power of storytelling for migrant communities. Founded in 2016, DREAMing Out Loud is a paid, tuition-free creative writing workshop series designed for undocumented and immigrant writers in the United States, offering them a platform to hone their craft, build confidence, and bring their stories into the public conversation.

At FILNYC, writer and teaching artist Charlie Vázquez, who serves as one of the program’s instructors, will be joined by a group of student authors to present excerpts of their original work. Together, they will reflect on the challenges and discoveries that come with writing from the margins, and on how the program has helped them find their voices, sharpen their skills, and create bonds of solidarity through literature.

This session will delve into the role of storytelling as both an artistic practice and a form of community building —a way of shaping identity, challenging stereotypes, and ensuring that underrepresented narratives claim their rightful space in contemporary literature.

The event will conclude with an open Q&A, offering the audience the opportunity to connect directly with these emerging writers and to engage in a dialogue about the role of creativity, resilience, and imagination in the face of displacement and exclusion.
