Join Borderland Folk and friends for an evocative evening celebrating the rich folklore, history, and voices of Ashfield and the Nottinghamshire coalfields. Through a mix of original compositions and traditional songs, the trio (and friends) will weave together the stories, struggles, and spirit of the region — from the proud heritage of its mining communities to the legends and literary roots that shape its identity.
Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed collection Singing the Seam, the performance explores the closing of the local pits and the human stories behind the coal seams that once fuelled Nottinghamshire’s heart. Interlaced with tales of the Carthusian monks of Beauvale Priory, reflections on D.H. Lawrence’s Eastwood, nods to Bendigo the Bare-Knuckle Fighter, and echoes of Robin Hood’s Sherwood, the evening paints a living portrait of place, people, and resilience.
Blending music, storytelling, and local history, Singing the Seam invites audiences to rediscover Ashfield’s cultural landscape — where fact and folklore meet in song. Expect heartfelt harmonies, authentic narratives, and a powerful sense of home, as Borderland Folk shine a light on the stories that continue to resonate beneath Nottinghamshire’s soil.
