BookWoman 2nd Thursday Poetry Reading and Open Mic welcomes features Lisha Adela Garcia and Cindy Huyser on Thursday, August 13 from 7:15 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. CDT at BookWoman (5501 N. Lamar #A-105) and simultaneously on Zoom in celebration of Garcia’s newly-released collection, Prayers to the Saint of Impossible Situations, and Cindy’s 15th anniversary as host of the BookWoman 2nd Thursday poetry series. A “round robin” open mic will follow the features. Julia Ross will co-host.

Lisha Adela García is the author of the poetry collections Prayers to the Saint of Impossible Situations (Blue Light Press, May 4, 2026), This Stone Will Speak (Pudding House Press), A Rope of Luna (Blue Light Press, 2018), and Blood Rivers (1st World Publishing, 2009). Her work has appeared widely in literary journals and anthologies, and she has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She is the recipient of the San Antonio Tricentennial Poetry Prize and has taught writing workshops and classes for a variety of organizations, colleges, and universities.
García, who holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, is a Certified Poetic Medicine Practitioner, Poetry Editor of Voices de la Luna–Yanaguana literary journal, and founder of Wyrdd Writers, a San Antonio–based writing community. She has presented at numerous literary conferences, including the San Francisco Writers Conference, and is dedicated to fostering creative expression, literary excellence, and the transformative power of poetry. She lives in Texas with her beloved four-legged companions.
Cindy Huyser is the author of the full-length poetry collection, Cartography (3: A Taos Press, 2025), the contest-winning chapbook, Burning Number Five: Power Plant Poems (Blue Horse Press, 2014), and co-editor of Bearing the Mask: Southwestern Persona Poems (Dos Gatos Press, 2016). Her work has received multiple Pushcart Prize nominations and has appeared in anthologies and journals including Contemporary Surrealist and Magical Realist Poetry (Lamar University Literary Press, 2022), San Pedro River Review, Defunkt Magazine, Comstock Review, Equinox, and The Windward Review. A featured author in the 2025 Texas Book Festival, Huyser holds an MFA from Pacific University.
