On Saturday, August 16, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., the Gorgas House Museum invites visitors to create their own historic bookplate! During this craft, children and adults can make bookplates and paste them in their personal books. Decorative paper, coloring utensils, stickers, tape, and stick glue will be provided. Visitors are welcome to bring their own books if they’d like to paste them in. Visitors will get the chance to learn about the history of bookplates and personal libraries and exercise their creative muscles.
Admission to this event is free.
About Bookkplates:
Bookplates are a way to show ownership of a book. Books were more valuable during the 16th century when bookplates started to be used, since it took a lot to produce them, so readers would paste images of their family crest on the backside of the front cover. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the styles of bookplates changed to reflect the personality of the owner, and art styles such as pictorial, landscape, and art deco became popular choices. Bookplate popularity has declined, but libraries still use them for dedication purposes when books are bought with donation funds.
