About the discussion:

WLT hosts Third Thursday each month, featuring discussions focusing on specific topics of interest to writers and readers, bringing together distinguished panelists for conversations moderated by a WLT staff member.

For our February Third Thursday, join us for a discussion on how to write believable, compelling love stories no matter your setting or genre.

At the core of every great romantic relationship there exists a connection between two people. Whether complicated, flawed, or stigmatized, whether it results in happiness or tragedy, exploring this connection in writing is one of the most daunting tasks a writer can take on. Each portrayal of love, romance, sex, and desire comes with new challenges, as characters’ motivations, preferences, and goals change, both relationally and individually. Romances exist, too, in the context and conflicts of a larger world. As a writer, how does one balance the interpersonal with the deeply impersonal, and portray satisfying romantic relationships on the page?

In this discussion, explore how to navigate these challenges to make your romantic plots fulfilling, compelling, and believable. We’ll be joined by authors Sajni Patel, N. E. Davenport, and Elijah “Quinn” Coleman for a discussion on how to approach writing romantic relationships, what constitutes a romance at all, and if and when to bring your characters to a happily ever after.

About the authors:

Nia "N.E." Davenport is an award-winning Science Fiction/Fantasy author. In addition, she's the co-CEO of StorySpinner Entertainment, a book packaging company aimed at bringing the world fun, innovative, and inclusive stories. She attended the University of Southern California and studied Biological Sciences and Theatre. She has an M.A. in Secondary Education, she taught secondary English and Science for several years, and designs English/Language Arts curriculum for school districts across the US. When she isn’t writing, she enjoys vacationing with her family, skiing, and being a huge foodie. She’s an advocate for diverse, reflective perspectives and protagonists in literature. You can find her online at www.nedavenport.com, on Twitter @nia_davenport, or on Instagram @nia.davenport, where she talks about binge-worthy TV, fun movies, and killer books.
Sajni Patel is the award-winning author of women’s fiction and young adult books. Her works have appeared in numerous Best of the Year and Must-Read lists from Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue, Apple Books, Audiofile, Tribeza, Austin Woman, NBC, Insider, and many others. Sajni is perhaps best known for The Trouble with Hating You, which NPR calls “a feisty, enemies-to-lovers office romantic comedy that also grapples with more serious subject matter”. Publisher’s Weekly gave her YA fantasy debut, A Drop of Venom, a starred review, saying, “Patel unflinchingly addresses themes of sexual assault and rape culture, trauma, and consent in this bold fusion of the Medusa myth and Indian folklore.”
Elijah “Quinn” Coleman is an author and artist residing in Austin with her cat, creatively named Cat. Coleman has been actively writing for over four years, since she needed a backstory for her DnD character. She now has multiple projects she’ll be publishing, from fantasy to horror to romance. Luckily for her, Cat makes an excellent writing assistant. You can find out more about Coleman’s art and other projects on her Instagram, @_quinnwrites.
