About the book:
Do you ever feel shaky or nervous when you're about to run a race? Any kind of competition can be a little scary. Sometimes your stomach may start to feel funny or your hands get sweaty. Wouldn't it be nice to have a superhero cheer for you as you got ready to start? Check out how Super DJ swoops in on Field Day to encourage the children as they compete in their events, learning to do their best regardless of the outcome. You can feel encouraged too when you face your next competition.
About the authors:
Texas native Derrick Johnson (DJ) is a former collegiate and NFL star linebacker, with a monumental 13-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs. Drafted by the team with the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft, he went on to earn four Pro Bowl and two All-Pro selections, and was named Pro Bowl Defensive MVP. DJ retired as the all-time leading tackler in Chiefs franchise history. During his college career at the University of Texas at Austin, he won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for the nation’s top defensive player, the Butkus Award for the nation’s top linebacker, and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
DJ has since been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, University of Texas Athletics Hall of Honor, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. While playing for the Chiefs, he founded the nonprofit Defend the Dream Foundation, which provides low-income and inner-city youth the opportunities and resources to reach their full potential in school and in life. After retiring from football in 2019, DJ returned to Austin, Texas, with his wife, Brittni, and their six children to continue Defend the Dream’s mission. In August 2025, DJ and Brittni wrote and released their first children’s book, Super DJ Saves Field Day. The inspiring story—about a dad-turned-superhero who flies in and helps kids overcome challenges and find their own superpowers—is the culmination of their work, helping kids to see themselves in the book's powerful lessons.
Brittni Johnson: Brittni Johnson combines her roles as a devoted mother, philanthropist, and wellness advocate to create lasting impact in the lives of young people. Together with her husband, former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick “DJ” Johnson, she helms the Defend the Dream Foundation, an organization with a powerful mission to provide young people with the opportunities and resources necessary to reach their full potential both in school and in life. The foundation's work has created tangible, meaningful change across multiple communities.
At home, Brittni and DJ are raising their own young readers with six children ranging in age from 4 to 16. Prioritizing a healthy lifestyle is important for the whole family, and led Brittni to pursue a certification to teach Pilates. Despite her busy schedule Brittni has cultivated interests that help her recharge. She enjoys playing tennis, indulging in cookies, relaxing by the pool, and shopping – activities that provide her with the balance necessary to maintain her high energy and positive outlook.
