Rio 2016 Olympic gymnastics champion Laurie Hernandez and former men's tennis world No. 57 and current USTA President Brian Vahaly join moderator Nick McCarvel and USA Today bestselling author Edward Schmit (The Open Era) for a conversation about the queer athlete journey, coming out, mental health, and more.
About the Panel
The panel will explore themes of the bestselling novel The Open Era, which follows 20-year-old Austin Hardy who becomes the first openly gay male tennis player to compete in a Grand Slam. During an electric two weeks at the US Open, Austin must battle his mental health, media attention, and a handsome new rival across the net.
Hernandez and Vahaly will share their perspectives on the LGBTQ+ experience on sports' biggest stages, and give insight on how the sporting and cultural spaces are shifting.
McCarvel is longtime out sports journalist, working as a commentator and host in tennis as well as across the Olympic realm for Olympics.com, NBC Sports, and others.
The bookstore will remain open for the ticketed event, which will include open thrift and book shopping for attendees and full cafe offerings, including beer and wine for purchase.
All ticket revenue will go to the greater Housing Works organization, a non-profit that fights for inclusive care, social justice, and an end to homelessness through integrated healthcare, life-changing services, relentless advocacy, and social enterprises.
