We are very excited to welcome local author, R.K. Benton for presentation about her debut novel, Of Hearts and Murder: A Cascade Shadows Mystery. Join us at the Leavenworth Public Library on Friday, May 8th from 5:30-7pm to meet the author, learn about her book, ask questions, and get a book signed. About the Book
Set in the fictional mountain town of Marion, Washington, Of Hearts and Murder: A Cascade Shadows Mystery, introduces readers to private investigator Cal Walker and marks the beginning of a series blending cozy-mystery ambience with emotional depth and Cold War-tinged intrigue. Benton's debut novel is a rich, character-driven mystery that explores love, legacy, and the price of second chances, told with a blend of suspense, emotional depth, and wry humor.
When Cal Walker returns to Marion, a small town nestled in the Cascade Mountains, he’s just trying to settle family affairs and leave quietly. But when a local developer turns up dead and a reformed criminal vanishes without a trace, Cal is pulled into an investigation that threatens to unravel the town’s carefully hidden past. Teaming up with Officer Inga Wells, Cal uncovers whispers of a chilling Cold War–era artifact as dangerous as anything ever devised. As more clues emerge—secret phone calls and tripwires, dangerous, long- forgotten laboratories and an exotic poison—Cal is entangled in a mystery where the past never stays buried.
Author Bio
R. K. Benton—Becky to her friends—is a Pacific Northwest author who writes heartfelt small-town mysteries with wit, warmth, and a dash of espionage. A lifelong storyteller, she has written everything from plays and live interactive performances to video-game scripts and operatic librettos. Her debut novel, Of Hearts and Murder, launched in 2025 and introduced readers to her signature blend of character-driven intrigue and cozy charm. In addition to her writing career, Benton is a co-founder of Write Club, a literary community based in Leavenworth, Washington, that supports local authors through workshops, readings, and collaborative storytelling events. Benton lives in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, where she continues to write mysteries, build fictional towns, and develop new interactive storytelling experiences.
