About this Event

Join us for an evening featuring a talk by the author, a book signing, live music, and light refreshments. A cash bar will also be available for those who'd like to purchase drinks.

Upheaval is based on the true story of Brita Olsdotter, a young mother in 19th Century Sweden, at a time when the state church rules every aspect of life. Brita and her husband Olof toil tirelessly on a farm where it snows half the year, wheat won't grow, and the nearest hospital is a two-day's wagon-ride away. When self-appointed prophet Erik Janson arrives in their valley, he opens Brita's eyes to the injustices of the church, but if she and Olof defy their powerful pastor and join Janson's sect, they risk backlash from the entire community, punishment from the powers that be, and perhaps even their lives.

Seattle writer Brita Butler-Wall is a long-time member of Swedish Club who explores the lives of Swedish immigrant women. Her articles have been published in Sweden and the U.S. For her contributions to the Swedish-American community, Butler-Wall was awarded King Carl XVI Gustaf's Bicentennial Medal in silver. She is the great-great-great granddaughter of Brita Olsdotter of the Voxna Valley, and Upheaval is her debut novel.

Admission to the event is free, but we'd love to know you're coming — please RSVP below.

“Immigration history comes alive in this engrossing story of how a religious rebellion against the established Lutheran church spreads among farming families in Sweden’s Voxna Valley in the mid-1800s…An immersive and exciting work of fiction.”

--Barbara Sjoholm, Author of The Reindeer of Chinese Gardens
