About this Event

Celebrate St Andrew’s Day with a Scottish Superheroes Special! Join us at Central Library for the Edinburgh launch of The Pocketbook Guide to Scottish Superheroes, the new novel from Edinburgh author Kirsti Wishart, published by Shoreline of Infinity.

It’s been five years since Scotland became the birthplace of a new breed of superheroes. Golden Eagle and the Phantom Fantoosh take to the skies, but not everyone gets such mighty gifts. Some people can only turn ceramics into instant coffee, or get round community centre opening hours.

Dundonian Cathy Burns is a former comic book artist who now works at the Benefits Agency, assessing entitlements for the newly “Abled.” Her girlfriend has become famous as the Silver Selkie. When one of Cathy’s clients dies in suspicious circumstances, Cathy starts a search for answers that takes her from a Muirhouse-based Oracle all the way to Rannoch Moor.

Hannu Rajaniemi, author of The Quantum Thief, describes the book’s superheroes as “profane, hilarious and miraculous.”

Kirsti will read from the book and talk about her writing. There will also be time for questions.

About the author: Kirsti Wishart lives in Edinburgh and has a PhD in Scottish Literature from the University of St Andrews. Her first novel, The Knitting Station, came out in 2021. Her second, The Projectionist, was named by SNACK Magazine as one of the ten best Scottish novels of 2022. She has been a Hawthornden Fellow. Her superpower would be waiting patiently.

Cover and illustrations by Siobhan MacDonald.
