Join authors Chris Hurl and Leah Werner in conversation with Bengi Akbulut, Kathryn Furlong and Pablo Mendez for a lively discussion about the role of consultancies in social and political life and how this unaccountable power can be challenged.Consultants are influencing decisions everywhere these days. Working behind the scenes, powerful consulting companies are shaping major policy decisions and public relations campaigns of a host of institutions, including how governments and universities respond to crises. In their new book, The Consulting Trap, Hurl and Werner expose the high cost of this shadow influence and its grave consequences for democracy, essential services, and the common good. Drawing on case studies from Canada and around the world, Hurl and Werner investigate how big consultancies leverage social networks, institutionalize relationships, mine and commodify data, and establish policy pipelines that facilitate the quick diffusion of ideas across jurisdictions.
All welcome! Please come out and participate in this important discussion.
The dialogue will be followed by a book signing and more discussion.
