About this Event

Discover the surprising world of boron with Dr Stephen Mansell (Heriot-Watt University), author of the forthcoming popular science book Boron: In Search of the Real Fifth Element.

From powering rockets and inspiring new antibiotics to revealing clues about Earth's ancient atmosphere, boron has shaped science and technology in remarkable and often unexpected ways. Join Dr Mansell as he takes you on a fascinating tour through some of the book's most intriguing stories.

This talk will be followed by a short introduction to one current area of research in the field of boron chemistry given by Baptiste Boyer, a PhD student at the University of St. Andrews, then a question-and-answer session chaired by Laura-Alexandra Smith, an RSC Education Coordinator based in Scotland. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to network and meet the author as part of a drinks reception.

Many thanks to the Royal Society of Chemistry Edinburgh and South East Scotland local section for sponsoring this event.

The book will be available from 12 October 2026: https://doi.org/10.1039/9781837070008
