Published during the anniversary week of The Communist Manifesto, this powerful analysis from one of the Manifesto Press stable's most compelling writers arrives at a crucial moment for re-engaging with foundational socialist thought.

Ritchie, acclaimed for his works on Marx and Work in the 21st Century, now turns his analytical skills to Engels. The book deeply explores how Engels’ formative period at his father’s Manchester cotton mill from 1842 exposed him to the brutal conditions that shaped his radicalism, forging an indelible link between the thinker and this city.
