About this Event
Award-winning poet, writer, artist, and educator, Diego Bastianutti is a keen observer and thoughtful critic of the world around us. Drawing from his life experiences—as a child refugee from Fiume (Rijeka), a displaced teenager in Italy, an immigrant in the United States, and later a professor in Canada—Bastianutti reflects on memory, identity, and the creative process.
In Castaways and Other Writings (1996–2024), he shares recollections of a lost homeland alongside imagined narratives and reflections on universal themes such as exile, belonging, and transformation. The works in this collection explore both physical and spiritual diaspora, addressing the lasting impact of war, displacement, emigration, and integration, and the constant need to adapt to externally imposed change.
This evening offers a unique opportunity to engage with an author whose writing provides insight into personal and collective histories shaped by displacement, as well as into the broader human experience.
A light refreshment will follow the presentation.
This event is presented by Il Centro – Italian Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver.
