Location: CHASS INTS 1111
Join the Center for Ideas and Society to celebrate the launch of Dr. Donatella Galella’s new book, Feeling Yellow: Asian Americans and Yellowface in Twenty-First-Century Musical Theatre (University of Michigan Press).
Professor Galella (Associate Professor of Theatre, Film, and Digital Production at UCR) will be in conversation with Professor Anthea Kraut (Professor of Dance at UCR). Light refreshments will be provided.
In Feeling Yellow, Galella examines how yellowface persists on the contemporary musical stage and how Asian American artists and audiences actively contest it. Drawing on productions ranging from Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes to The Mikado and Soft Power, Galella introduces key concepts such as "feeling yellow"—the complex affect of racialized anger, despair, and alienation—and "yellowface without yellowed faces" to illuminate subtle forms of contemporary theatrical racism and Asian American activism.
Sponsored by the UCR Center for Ideas and Society, Departments of Dance and of Theatre, Film, and Digital Production.
