About this Event
Join us for the Book Launch: "A Lowestoft Family" by Douglas Bourn.
Lowestoft is a unique town in the east of England. This book traces its history from the late nineteenth century to the present day through the lives of the author’s extended family.
Through one family’s stories, the book explores the effects of education, employment opportunities, and health on a typical working-class family. Issues of class and gender emerge in discussions of hopes, aspirations, and changing expectations for the future. Lowestoft’s development as a seaside resort in the nineteenth century is examined and consideration is given to how tourism shaped local employment and contributed to perceptions of the town as a safe and supportive place to grow up.
The book will be formally launched by local MP Jess Asato with contributions from people mentioned in the book as well as reflections from the author, Douglas Bourn.
Food and drinks will be available at the event as well as an opportunity to visit the Lowestoft Museum opposite the Pavillion.
