About this Event

We are pleased to offer a double Bateson book launch in Portland, OR, this Fall! Join us for a cozy evening of thoughtfully selected readings from Nora Bateson's newest book, Belly. In complement to her previous works, Bateson's latest publication brings the topic of infinite orders of change into the intimate world of intergenerational learning from the belly that has been tending and digesting all along: through the kitchen and shared meals, the birth room, the deathbed, the grief, the art that arrives unannounced, the parenting, the ceremonies and celebrations, the unsticking of habits of perception, the recognition of the among-ing of all life. We will be joined several members of the team that made Belly possible: editor, layout designer, and artist Leslie Thulin Eubanks, artist Rachel Hentsch.

Renowned Bateson scholar, Phillip Guddemi, will also be sharing from his most recent research and compilation project, Gregory Bateson's Ecology of Mind: The Course. In 1976, Gregory Bateson taught a course called An Ecology of Mind. For nearly fifty years, the recordings of that course sat in the archive, unpublished and unheard by most, even while the ideas continued. Compiled and edited by Phillip Guddemi from the transcripts of recorded lectures, this 465-page volume breathes the course into new form and onto the page: Gregory in conversation and mid-thought, telling stories, circling questions from many angles. A new entry point into learning to think ecologically.

There are tiered tickets with options that include basic general admission or general admission with one copy of Belly, which you can have personally signed by Nora Bateson following the panel discussion/readings and Q&A. Copies of Belly and Gregory Bateson's Ecology of Mind: The Course will be for available for purchase at the event.
Light refreshments will also be provided to our guests.
