Wine reception to follow
Scholar and public interest lawyer Scott W. Stern launches a sweeping study of sexual assault trials in the Jim Crow South—There is a Deep Brooding in Arkansas. Braiding together the stories of two nationally headlining rape trials, Stern examines how the Jim Crow legal system relied on selectively prosecuting rape to uphold the racial, gender, and economic hierarchies of the segregated, unequal South. A kaleidoscopic narrative, There is a Deep Brooding in Arkansas, details the racial and economic inequities of rape law and the resistance of ordinary women ordinary women—including a young Maya Angelou. Joining Stern onstage is acclaimed author and historian Elizabeth Hinton (America on Fire). The two will have an in-depth discussion about the book before an audience Q&A and signing.
