About this Event
Brought to you by Marquis Studios, in this workshop, Teaching Artists will learn tools to cultivate a culture of ‘oral tradition’ in the classroom. They will learn how to develop their own process as storytellers, from collecting tales to telling them to discussing them and then learn how to use them as a foundation to create community in their classroom. The tools learned in this workshop will come from Nate Speare’s background as an oral storyteller serving NYC public schools as a Teaching Artist for over a decade. Nate has also facilitated a therapeutic storytelling program for incarcerated men at Rikers Island. He has worked extensively with students in District 75 as part of Everyday Arts for Special Education, a federal research grant using the arts for social emotional learning and kinesthetic learning for students with disabilities. His approach to oral storytelling integrates personal, ecological and somatic awareness with culturally responsive pedagogy, kinesthetic learning and a mythopoetic approach to life.
