Book Coven - June 2026 - The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

Book Coven is an intentionally curated book club led by Sam Lauer and Kendra Jithoo that focuses on reading witchy & mystical books for those who crave more magic in their lives.
Last time when Book Coven met in April to discuss The Bane Witch, the group voted on what our next book club book will be, and we decided on The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo!
Book Coven's next meeting will be:
Wednesday, June 17th
from 6-8pm at
The Witch's Parlor in HIlliard!
Keep these discussion questions in mind:
- What role does religion play in the lives of Luzia, Hualit and Valentina? How is religion different from belief for them?
- This story blends fantasy with historical fiction. How well did it manage this balance?
- Were you surprised by who ends up befriending Luzia, and who ends up betraying her?
- Santángel thinks that his life has been “both long and remarkably boring.” What are your thoughts about immortality? Would you want to live forever?
- In what ways do you feel the Spanish Inquisition influences the competition, its participants and its audience, if at all? Were you surprised by its pervasive influence?
- The author concludes with information about how each of the characters’ lives continued over the years. What did you think of their fates? Do you think everyone deserved their fate? Who, in your opinion, deserved better, who deserved worse, and why?
- How do the types of magic shown in The Familiar relate to your own magical practice? Did anything here inspire you in ways that might alter or transform your own magical practice?
See you later this month!
