Annihilation follows a team of four women—a biologist, an anthropologist, a surveyor, and a psychologist—as they enter the mysterious ecosystem known as Area X, a region rendered uninhabitable by an unknown source of environmental catastrophe.

For decades, government-sanctioned expeditions have attempted to study the land. Yet Area X remains largely unknown: the members of the previous eleven expeditions have either died or returned irrevocably changed, suffering from psychological distress or terminal illness.

Now, on the twelfth expedition, we are immersed in our unnamed narrator’s hypnotic experience of the strange world around her.
