ADDED NOTE: Because this quarter of the school year overlaps with Spring Break please, please refer to the dates posted on the event graphic. Facebook's event posts are limited. I can not remove specific dates from the run of the event, like Spring Break's Thursday. I apologize for the confusion.
Now, on to the fun!
This book club is now into its 4th edition!
This time we’ll be working our way through some
⭐️⭐️“SERIES STARTERS!”. ⭐️⭐️
The idea is to give your kids a glimpse into a series and then they can continue the series they like at their own pace for fun later.
Speaking of pace, last year our average assigned reading was 100 pages per week., and we completed 18 novels. This year I pulled back a little. We'll be doing 14 novels, which will average out to about 83 pages per week, but that includes what is read together in class.
NOTE: There will not be reading assigned during "off weeks".
Here’s the book schedule:
📕 📕 1st QUARTER 📕 📕
Thursdays, 8/28 - 10/23, 10 - 11:15 a.m.
📕”The Wizard Of Oz”
📕”The Indian In The Cupboard”
📕 “Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief”
📘 📘2nd QUARTER 📘 📘
Thursdays, 10/30 - 1/15, 10 - 11:15 a.m.
📘”Serafina & The Black Cloak”
📘”Holes”
📘”Hatchet”
📙 📙3rd QUARTER 📙 📙
Thursdays, 1/22 - 3/26, 10 - 11:15 a.m.
📙”A Wrinkle In Time”
📙”The Littles”
📙”Pippi Longstocking”
📙”Enola Holmes”
📗 📗4th QUARTER 📗 📗
Thursdays, 4/2 - 5/28, 10 - 11:15 a.m.
📗”Anne Of Green Gables”
📗"The Giver”
📗”The Boxcar Children”
📗”Goosebumps: Monster Blood”
$70/student per 9-Thursday session.
Snacks & tea provided. If your child has allergies it's best for them to bring a backup snack in case what we have is not something they're allowed.
Must have a minimum of 6 students and a maximum of 25 students each quarter. Spaces are given on a first-paid-first-given basis.
Meetings are in the Oviedo YMCA's meeting room, and our backup location is the Oviedo Bowling Center's meeting room.
Book Club is for all ages but would likely be best for ages 8 through 14. If your child can read these books, tolerate a class setting, and follow directions then this is the class for them!
Each week we’ll read a chapter or three together, sip tea, and eat snacks. Depending on the week we’ll do a game or project. There will be group discussion every week.
We’ll talk about major literary devices, the decisions characters make, vocabulary, terms that aren't used anymore, and more.
Just about every week parents will get a vocabulary list (posted in the event) to go over with their kids, if you choose. In that same place you’ll also see the assigned reading that’s to be done before the next Book Club meeting.
Something different about this edition is that I've made worksheets for the kids to document their feelings on the books they've read, as well as the country the author is from, and some other interesting facts. I'll write the answers for most things on the board so students don't have to stress about spelling.
The reading will never be over 90 pages/week by my count. Some books have larger print and/or more pictures, so your copy may be a little different, but know that that was my goal!
When time permits we will also watch a piece of the movies that match the books and discuss their differences & similarities.
If you’re struggling through English Lit. with your kids, this is a great stand-in. Book Clubs can be used for this subject on evaluations, so save the kids' worksheets, posted vocabular, and in-class drawings!
Brief details:
💚Oviedo YMCA's meeting room, Oviedo Bowling Center's meeting room when the Y is using our space for camps.
💙Just about every non-holiday Thursday of the school year (36 in all), 10:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m., unless it’s a movie day.
🤎The specific dates can be found on the event banner picture as well as within the event.
♥️This is NOT a drop off program. Parents wait in the nearby lobby.
🧡We have light snacks each week.
‼️Bring a teacup or coffee mug each week! We try out a new mystery tea every time we meet!
💜EACH student must have their own copy of the book in class each week. Siblings sharing copies has never worked out in class. Digital copies work too.
💎The cost is $70 per child per quarter. Payment MUST be received in order for your student to officially hold a spot. Once the 25 spots fill up there's nothing that can be done. We're limited by physical space in the classroom.
💚Payment can be sent through PayPal to [email protected]. I’ll send you a FB message confirmation as a receipt. Cash is also accepted, but it can be harder to get to me ahead of time.
‼️‼️VERY IMPORTANT‼️‼️
If I do not have full payment from 6 or more students ONE WEEK before the 9-week quarter starts I do have to cancel that whole quarter. This is because I have to rent our space and won’t rent the space if we don’t have students sign up. I'd lose money and that's not sustainable for my family.
🧡Students are not required to attend every week in a session, but the cost remains the same even if only one week is attended. (The goal is for students to come to all 9 weeks of class per quarter, but I know that’s not always possible).
Please let me know if you’d like any details I’ve missed putting in!
⚡️⚡️I AM SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS NEXT EDITION OF BOOK CLUB!⚡️⚡️
