Inspired by the author's own family history, this multigenerational saga follows an enslaved family and their white owners through the final months of the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the long shadow of Jim Crow. Fancher began his journalism career right here in Nashville at WSM-TV before becoming an award-winning documentary filmmaker — and that Southern soul runs through every page.
