About this Event
When America broke with Great Britain in 1776, even beyond the long war ahead, a fundamental question hovered over the Founding Fathers: what would a new democratic government actually look like? England, while a monarchy, had long had ago enshrined its checks and balances in the Magna Carta, and now America would do the same with its constitution. Using known principals and new ideas, the founders grappled with issues like balances of power, slavery and freedom, fundamental freedoms, and states rights. Ultimately, they created a living document still used today.
Join us for a chat about our American constitutionalism - prior reading not required! - through the eyes of author Gordon Wood. This discussion will be led by a Book Chats member. We will also be discussing top picks for next season's Book Chats, which are chosen by popular vote!
