About this Event
Join us for a very special BONUS Coffee with Friends this month! Jim Pfiffer will tell us all about one of our river’s most surprising former residents: the American Eel.
These remarkable creatures once thrived in the Chemung River, until dams, overfishing, and pollution pushed them out of our waterways. During this free, informal presentation, you’ll learn how American eels help keep rivers healthy, snack on invasive crayfish, and provide food for people and wildlife alike.
The good news? They’re coming back.
Fourth-grade students at Finn Academy Charter School in Elmira, along with students at 40 other schools, are raising young eels right in their classrooms. At the end of the school year, those eels will be released into our rivers to help restore what was lost. Students and staff from Finn Academy will join us to share their hands-on work and excitement for the Eels in the Classroom project!
We’ll also follow the eel’s incredible life journey—from local rivers all the way to the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic Ocean, where they spawn, before their offspring eventually make the long swim back home.
Doors open at 8:30am, with the presentation starting at 9am
Come for the coffee and snacks, stay for the eels!
Remember to bring your own cup for coffee or tea!
