Bone Building with Yoga
With Mary Jo Kuzmick, M.Ed, Yoga Alliance instructor
Past age 35, bone density decreases which can cause osteopenia and osteoporosis. In this workshop, you will learn about the health of bones and a ten-year longitudinal study where participants raised bone mineral density (BMD) with specific yoga poses for the spine, hips and femur. With pre and post DEXA scans, the study conducted by Dr. Loren Fishman of Columbia University concluded the reversal of bone loss that reached stages of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Learn and practice these 12 specific yoga poses. Modifications and chairs will be provided for those who have osteoporosis. Handouts provided.
Practicing yoga improves balance, promotes better posture, enhances coordination, increases range of motion and strength, improves the gait, reduces levels of anxiety and is a safe and effective means of preventing falls and osteoporosis related fractures.
