Samuel Curtis, an astronaut from Earth, deals in a rare goods, living or otherwise. His mission begins with the unlikely delivery of a cat to a small outer-belt asteroid saloon where he meets his former dance partner, and renowned interplanetary fruit thief, the Blueberry Pirate. As payment for his delivery of the cat, Curtis receives a homemade cloning device already in the process of creating a creature most rare in this space quadrant, to take to the all-male mining planet, Pluto in exchange for ‘the boy who once saw a woman’s breast’. But who is the mysterious Professor Hess, and why does he want to K*ll our hero?
The American Astronaut is an incredibly personal affair—SF musician and auteur Cory McAbee wrote, directed, starred, composed the songs, helped paint the backdrops, and probably sold the popcorn on opening night. Made on a budget of less than 1 million dollars this oddball black and white sci-fi comedy western drama sits somewhere between John Carpenter’s Dark Star, Eraserhead, Ed Wood and The Twilight Zone and is more than deserving of the term ‘cult status’.
As one reviewer put it: it’s easy to fall in love and become entertained with the American-style bars and Southern acoustic songs...but its even more entrancing to marvel at the black-white grading and cinematography of such a spontaneous space-trek of a picture.
